The Talon 9K-SAM is a stationary emplacement that players build with a Large Hammer. Its weapon is a heavy mounted machine gun that fires 72 mm rounds in single shots. Its name points to an anti-air role. The data also gives it lock-on timings (see Targeting) and a target list of air vehicles only: the Little Bird family, the Havoc, the Huey, the Z20 Lakota family and the fixed-wing airplane. It is set to fire only while locked on.
Overview
Destroying an enemy Talon 9K-SAM pays 650 cash and 175 Role XP.
The Talon is built from 650 Build Supplies and has 3,000 HP. It is one of six stationary weapons listed on the Building page, and it is placed with the same rules as the other stationary weapons.
Effects
Weapon
The gun fires 100 rounds/min in semi-automatic mode, which is one shot per trigger pull. An effective range of 1,000 m is listed. The game gives a reload time of 5.0 s and a starting count of 1 round. The gun is restocked with Ammo Supplies, and a full restock takes 200 of them. No restock amount is set, so the engine default of one round is used (derived).
Targeting
The emplacement has 2.0 s to lock onto a target, and a 0.5 s delay after the lock before it fires. A lock only decides whether the weapon can fire. Flares do not clear a lock; they pull a missile that is already in flight toward a flare point beside the helicopter (see Countermeasures and flares).
Use and timing
The Talon uses the same placement rules as the other stationary weapons: it is built with a Large Hammer, and its placement conditions check the Forward Operating Base bounds, a ladder check (not within 1 m of a ladder) and a safe zone check (not within 3 m of a safe zone or while standing in one). The Building page describes these rules for every structure.
Destroying it
The Talon 9K SAM has 3,000 HP. Explosives that burst within their inner radius take this many hits to destroy it: MAAWS 4, RPG-7 4, IED 4, C4 1, M67 frag 4. The counts are worked out from the damage rules, not timed in play, and assume full health with no repair. See the Anti-Vehicle Guide.
